Anaesthesia can be a worrying part of general practice. This worry can be amplified during emergency situations where staff are stressed and the animal is compromised by the acute disease process. We will discuss the underlying pathophysiology pertinent to anaesthesia of some common small animal emergency cases. We will also consider how we can stabilise the animal beforehand and what drugs may be appropriate to optimise a good outcome.
