Cardiology

João Loureiro heads the cardiology department at London Vet Specialists. In close collaboration with the London Vet Specialists referral team, the cardiology service will investigate, diagnose and treat all forms of cardiac disease. We provide a bespoke investigation and treatment plan for each patient whilst delivering excellence in patient and owner care.

We know that the possibility of a heart condition can be concerning, and the first step is a thorough evaluation and the correct diagnosis. Investigations will often start with an echocardiogram (heart scan) and may also include an electrocardiogram (ECG), blood pressure measurement and thoracic radiographs (chest X-rays) when appropriate.

Your initial consultation will usually last from 30 to 45 minutes, where we will take a thorough history and examine your pet. We will always discuss potential costs, outcomes and possible risks. Your pet will usually need to stay with us for just a few hours, but sometimes overnight hospitalisation for further investigation and treatment may be recommended.

Most patients are investigated without sedation (our team ensures the safety and comfort of your pet during all procedures) but travelling to a veterinary hospital can be stressful for your pet. Medications such as Trazadone for dogs and Gabapentin for cats can alleviate some of the stress. Please discuss these options with our primary veterinary care team and we are always available to offer further support.

João Loureiro is currently the only cardiology specialist operating in central London. With the support of our highly experienced team, your pet will receive the highest standard of diagnosis and care.

We treat cats and dogs for a range of heart conditions and related issues:

  • Heart murmurs
  • Breathing problems
  • Collapsing episodes
  • Exercise intolerance
  • Heart failure
  • Abnormal heart rhythms (arrhythmias)
  • Congenital heart conditions such as patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) and pulmonic stenosis
  • Diseases involving the heart sac (pericardium)
